The present paper attempts to analyse the working of the District Administration in Himachal Pradesh with special reference to district Shimla. This area was specifically selected because Shimla, being the capital of Himachal Pradesh, has a long history of district administration which can be used fruitfully for the present study. For this avowed object, the interview schedule was prepared and circulated amongst 75 respondents selected on the basis of random sampling of the people who visited office of the Deputy Commissioner during the study period (2008–2009) for getting their work done. Their opinion has been analysed and data interpreted with the help of tables and pie-charts. This paper has examined and analysed the relationship of Deputy Commissioner with the general public and concludes with some useful suggestions that can make district administration more effective so that it comes up to the expectations of the general public.
