Abstract

Officialdom or bureaucracy represents the core of the society and reflects the dynamics of the same. The fact that the bureaucrats are entrusted with a sacred job seems to have gone into oblivion but their ideal role is not to be overemphasised. The masterly job of synthesis between theoretical knowledge and professional expertise is aptly done by them. Instances of aberrations are not few either. Nonetheless, the bureaucrats can very well mould the moral fabric of a nation. In the countries like Bangladesh, being a seasoned bureaucrat is still a cherished dream for many youth though private sector has made inroads into the ‘talent hunt’ and succeeded to a degree. It takes a young man substantial amount of perseverance to become a bureaucrat, so it is not unlikely that he or she would deem himself or herself somewhat ‘special’ and ‘distinct’ from the commoners. However, problems arise when he or she extends this privilege beyond the limits and, unfortunately, this is still the order of the day in the countries that underwent colonial rule, not least Bangladesh.
