The rights to food and decent living are basic human rights guaranteed by various international conventions and the Constitution of India. Despite the fact that the Constitution of India and various laws affirm the right to food and nutrition for all, the truth is that India is undergoing a situation of food insecurity. Food crisis is triggered by a number of factors which can be classified as natural and human-induced factors. Since food and nutritional security is directly related to the living prospects of the people, therefore, it is vital for national security. Food insecurity can be considered both as a cause and an effect of all kinds of vulnerabilities. Inadequate food and nutrition have adverse health effects. Persons affected by food and nutritional insufficiency are neither in a position to engage themselves in productive and gainful employment nor can they be engaged for worthwhile tasks. All these aggravate their poverty and make them vulnerable to all sorts of threats. This type of scenario is not good for national security.
