School going children are considered particularly vulnerable to disasters. Their role as communicators for disaster-related messages to the associated communities is also increasingly recognized. Notwithstanding this understanding of the links and implications of primary education, children and disasters, there has been strikingly limited research on the subject. This study is conceived within this back drop and it attempts to critically examine the contents of Primary School Curriculum in Bangladesh, with a view to identifying the current focus and content on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)’. The principal research tools include desk review and context analysis, a purposive survey, interviews and focus group discussion. The article is organized into four sections. After setting the scene in the first section, the objectives, rationale and methodological considerations of the study are presented in the second section. The third section then sheds light on the broader contextual background concerning DRR and primary education in Bangladesh. The key observations and findings are summarized in the fourth section. The last section proffers some clues on improvement of the overall condition.
