Import Substitution Measure and Expansion of Border Trade: A Strategy for Coexistence in Manipur
Abstract
The problem of dependency of the people in Manipur for their consumption on goods imported from other parts of the country is compounded with a large inflow of goods from or via., Myanmar particularly under informal border trade. So, a well-prepared and expertise government’s interference is a need of the hour more significantly in the light of the fast growing free market economy of globalized world. The issue raise in this study is a matter of choice of a measure at priori to rescue the deteriorating pattern of trade of the state rather than consideration for a sustainable strategy for industrialization in the state.
This paper will discuss the scope of import substituting industrialization (ISI) in Manipur as a measure to rescue its pattern of trade from further deterioration. Discussion will be extended on the direction to sketch a conceptual strategy for expansion of Indo-Myanmar border trade in the state when import substitution measure is also taken up simultaneously in it.
