Purulia is the most economically backward district of West Bengal. In the district, farming is the main source of livelihood. Large share of the total rural population of the district depends on agriculture for their subsistence. During the globalization period, there are opportunities for the agricultural sector in India to develop. Taking opportunities of globalization West Bengal agriculture recorded an increasing trend in crop diversification while the agricultural growth scenario of Purulia district calls in question that economic globalization is sine qua non to reduce rural predicament. The present paper highlights the retarded and dismal trend in crop diversification of the district and also its insignificant role in the district's agricultural production.
