Abstract

Dowry death is a grim fact in our society. Dowry death is attacked as ‘murders’ by women activists and defended strongly as ‘accidental death’ or ‘suicide’ by the in-laws. Section 498 A has provided a route for justice to many. But critics and the Courts have also pointed out its glaring abuses. However, the fact remains that dowry-deaths are happening and women from all sections of the society are facing dowry-harassment. The incidents of dowry-deaths are a standing testimony to the low status of womanhood and the premature termination to their talent development process; thus, depriving the society of valuable contribution.
