The study has been undertaken in two subtropical districts namely Jammu and Udhampur of Jammu region. About 100 households having small, medium and large dairy enterprise have been studied. Various cost concepts have been employed to work out the costs and returns from milk production per animal per day. It has been found that net revenues per animal per day vary from Rs. 33.70/- in small farms to Rs. 41.74/- in large farms. Large farms in Jammu and medium farms in Udhampur no doubt are making higher net returns as compared to the other farms due to lower cost. The labour cost per animal per day in the selected districts is exclusively more in small farms due to the involvement of entire family labour in the event of disguised unemployment. Further it has been observed that the share of marketed surplus increases with the increase in size of herd.
