Abstract

Student - centered learning (SCL) is a model where students are placed at the core of the learning process, with teachers acting as mere facilitators, aiming at providing them with authentic, need based instructions, cooperative and collaborative learning through an active, democratic and child friendly approach; a concept comparatively reverse to the traditional teaching pedagogy. Researches document that providing children with this kind self instructional learning assists in boosting their interest, commitment, confidence and innovative ability, they develop better understanding, reasoning, and problem solving skills and connect better to knowledge since they are given an independent platform to experiment, explore and reason with problems. The present paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview with regards to: Firstly, the concept, characteristics and a review of literature citing the role, importance and limitations of Student Centered Learning. Secondly, the Core Building Blocks/Principles underlying in fostering Student Centered teaching and learning in classrooms opening doors for future research.
