Abstract

Values are vital to an individual's life since they are normative of one's actions and understanding. Ways of choosing and prioritizing values vary across individuals. The prioritization of values has a significant role in the degree of subjective well-being of an individual. Schwartz's (1992) theory of universals in the content and structure of basic values along with supportive literature have been referred to in order to shed light on the dynamic nature of values. Certain values bring about more well-being than do others. Need and motivation also determine values prioritization and have considerable effect on individuals’ well-being. Value priorities vary across age and culture. Likewise, value congruence between an individual and his or her environment has considerable bearing on the sense of that individual's well being. A comprehensive model of value-oriented education has been suggested based on the premise that values play an important role in students’ well being and its implication for teachers and educational administrators have been identified.
