Strategic Issues in Developing Effective Resource-based Livelihood Interventions in Tribal Areas

The case is about the livelihood intervention through cashew fruits in Tahajong, a small village in Odisha. There was an attempt in early 2000 to use Jatropha plant seeds as a source of biofuel in India, the government tried tprogramme since this type of options can provide economic benefits at local level and can be a source too expand the farmers and villagers for income generation. However, due to various reasons this could not succeed. The case talks about cashew fruit being alternative to Jatropha and how it can be used as a strategic livelihood intervention. The case analyses the potential of cashew fruits to serve as a source of biofuel and income generating occupation for farmers. The case also tries to analyse the scalability, feasibility and economic potential of the intervention.
