Promoting Export of Crochet Laces from India: Role of Export Promotion Council of Handicrafts

Abstract

Narsapur, situated in Andhra Pradesh is famous for its crochet work. It is one of the largest center of crochet artisans, withmore than 1, 00, 000 women engaged in this home based employment opportunity. Considering the vast unexploited potential in this region, Narsapur was classified as a Mega Cluster under the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Since then the city has witnessed surge in production and export of crochet work. Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts was entrusted with the respossibility to develop strategies to ensure that all the artisans in the region are connected with the policy framework of the Government of India and are benefitted Government initiatives. This case study is an attempt to analyze the intiatives taken by the Export Promotion Council fory the Handicrafts to promote crochet work in Narsapur and how artisans in the region have benefitted from the scheme.
