Low dose and longer exposure to chromium (vi) provokes alterations in the membrane atpases in the liver tissue of mice

Abstract

Present study reports the low, environmentally available oral doses (5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/kg bw/d) and longer exposure durations (7, 14, 21 and 28 d) depend effect of Cr (VI) on few membrane-bound ATPases (Total, Na+-K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+-ATPases) in liver tissue of mice. Highly significant dose dependent effects were observed in all the ATPases studied. Highly significant exposure duration dependent effects were also observed in Ca2+ and Mg2+ ATPases. It is possible that the inhibitory effects of low, environmentally available doses of Cr (VI) on membrane bound ATPases were due to the indirect effect of the highly toxic chromium through complex physiological processes in the liver. It may also be due to the oxidative stress caused by chromium load inside the liver cell and configurational changes in membrane bound proteins of the mice hepatocytes.
