Abstract

Village is the primary development unit in a state or a nation, so that status on development and inequality of villages is highly needed to study for balance growth and development. The present study analyzes development status of villages, village inequality and inter-district villages inequality in Mizoram. It also studies the relationship between development and inequality among villages. The entire study depends on secondary data collected from village profile and development indicators, 2017-2018 and statistical handbook 2018 published by directorate of economics and statistics, government of Mizoram. Z score standardized technique has been used for measurement of village development status, Gini coefficient of variation was adopted to find village inequality. Pearson coefficient of correlation is also employed to find the relationship between development and inequality of villages in the state. Arc GIS 10.1 was used to prepare maps and other cartographic techniques like bar diagram and simple arithmetic methods have been employed. The main factors causing high inequality among villages are household water connection facilities, availability of petrol pumps and community toilets facilities while inequality were very low in availability of public playground, drinking water facilities at schools, village electrification and toilet facilities. Village inequality is highest in Mamit district and lowest in Serchhip and Siaha district. At the same village status are high in Aizawl district and poor in Lawngtlai district. The study also finds that there is a low positive correlation between development and inequality in the state.
