Abstract

Oil palm is a major plantation crop in a tropical region that support livelihood to many small farmers. From 2005, Oil palm plantation was started in Mizoram. A good number of farmers have started Oil palm plantation because they do not have other permanent occupation and hope that Oil palm is economically viable. The area and production was also increased for many years. But after some times, many farmer especially small farmers stop Oil palm plantation due to several problems. The area cover is also decreasing in the later period. In the present situation, most of the farmers want to stop plantations due to huge financial involvement in farm management, labour and marketing. Low selling rate, low profit and environment degradation are another factor to make the farmers to leave the plantation.
