Abstract

Because of its topography and geographical location, Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, is vulnerable to significant natural hazards like earthquakes, landslides and cyclones. Even though the occurrence and the severity of natural hazards cannot be stopped, the vulnerability can be reduced through awareness, education, preparedness, and prediction and warning systems. A study on Risk Perception emphasised the role of making prudent disaster reduction decisions. The main purpose of this study is to measure the level of risk perception and the factors which influence the risk perception of natural hazards like earthquakes and landslides in their residential environment among private renters in Aizawl City. The analysis reveals that the tenants’ risk perception of natural hazards is relatively low compared to the natural conditions of their residential environment. Age, income, age and type of building, and slope degree influence the disaster risk perception in Aizawl.
