Abstract

Free and fair elections are at the heart and soul of the representative form of democracy. Elections serve as a means of communication between the public and the Government. It is a process through which leaders are selected by vote for a political office. The event of elections provides the public an opportunity to choose between political alternatives. The Election Commissions has played a pivotal role in formation of India. State Election Commissions (SECs) got the constitutional validity via the 73rd and 74th Amendments in 1993. The present study starts with the State Election Commission of Uttar Pradesh on variables like service conditions of the commissioner, and so on. The study focuses on the evolving complexion of SECs in the changing environment. However, the role of various political parties and citizens and the sensitive issues of electoral reforms have to be simultaneously addressed for ensuring real democracy.
