Effect of utilization of cooperative learning in student’s performance

Abstract

The study was designed to explore the effect of Cooperative Learning on Science achievement of Grade 11 Senior High School of students in the three Senior High Schools in the province of Bulacan offering Earth and Life Science.

The researcher conducted a 20-item questionnaire on the effectiveness of the cooperative learning in three (3) schools in the district Paombong offering Earth and Life Science. The researcher reviews some studies and theories regarding cooperative learning. The descriptive correlational design was chosen for this study.

The study revealed that teachers utilized cooperative learning approach in teaching strategy in the classroom in terms of Jigsaw, Role-plays and Group Problem Solving. The overall implications under Cooperative Learning (CL) approach in teaching classroom would affect the student’s performance were interpreted as great extent (x=4.13). The academic performance of Grade 11 SHS students was described by their grades which revealed to have an average of 82 rating as computed in this study. The findings of this study have shown a great impact on the student’s performance. Cooperative Learning approach was very effective in teaching Science concepts and theories as it rejected the null hypothesis. Therefore, CL was highly encouraged be used as approach in teaching particularly in Science Education.

Finally, it was recommended in this study that cooperative learning, must be utilized by all teachers, to allow learners improves attitude towards participation and that would have greatly effect on the performance of the Senior High School student.
