Schools were closed from March 2020 to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in India and this impacted the education system in India especially the schools affecting more than 32 crore students out of which 70% are from government schools.2 Hence to curb this issue Karnataka government launched the Vidyagama program in August 2020.
To understand the experiences of government school teachers in implementing the Vidyagama program
Qualitative study design is used. 21 government school teachers were asked to fill in the socio-demographic questionnaire and later in-depth interview was taken to understand their experiences. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS and Nvivo software.
The thematic analysis outlined the difficulties like lack of support and resources in implementing the program and barriers like embarrassment and hesitation among teachers during teaching, distraction among the students as major hindrances for implementation. It was also noted that there was a loss of learning among the students due to the lockdown.
The government needs to upgrade the training programs for teachers which includes online teaching training and promote their online portals to reach the target audience
