Abstract

This paper provides a brief overview of the fundamental objectives of assessment in higher education. These include setting clear expectations, a workload that enables students to achieve these expectations without overtly relying on rote methods, and a system of feedback and practice that will enable students to monitor themselves. It also identifies present trends in learning processes across the globefrom an ‘instruction paradigm’ to a ‘learning paradigm’ with a learner-centred focus. It then turns attention to the condition of higher education in India, as well as some of its challenges, of which assessment is one. The author proposes ascheme of assessment of higher education in India, keeping in mind the objectives that inform the assessment process. The scheme includes semester system and percentage of marks distributed across end-term examinations, class participation, and project work involVing programme assessment, process assessment and outcome assessment, indiVidually as well as in collaboration.
