The role of languages in forming culture, society or civilizations is infinite. With ever increasing globalisation, English language has provided a common medium of communication across the globe. The language has acquired a significant role in bringing the world together being one of the most widely spoken languages around the world. English language intruded India long back and since then survived. With the passage of time, Indians have not only accepted this language but it has been also identified as a crucial language for further development and growth of an individual as well as for the country. Curriculum designers have identified the need of fostering the speaking and listening skills of English language among Indian students. CBSE has evidently outlined the significance of speaking and listening skills as part of co-scholastic areas of achievement by every learner and also stresses the clear integration of evaluation of speaking and listening skills as a part of the curriculum transaction with the help of its flagship project CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation). In the academic year 2013–14, CBSE introduced a tool to assess the same wherein Assessment of Speaking and Listening (ASL) was formally tested as a pilot study in some of the CBSE schools. The paper intends to depict the effectiveness of the same.
