Abstract

This study examines the role of village libraries in promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools and providing essential information to support livestock farming in Sikkim. It discusses the technological and socioeconomic factors influencing ICT adoption in rural farming techniques. In order to investigate ICT tool utilisation, awareness levels, information demands, and related issues, the study employs a mixed-method approach that includes questionnaire surveys and farmer interviews. Although the farmers are aware of ICT, their utilisation has to be increased because livestock farmers hardly ever utilise village libraries to get information. Furthermore, a predilection for traditional tools over contemporary technologies emphasises the need for education and awareness campaigns. Lack of mobiles, poor internet connectivity, low educational attainment, and insufficient training are some of the main obstacles. In addition to highlighting the village library as a valuable but underutilised information resource, the report recommends using ICT technologies in livestock management. It recommends targeted awareness programs through village libraries and emphasises the need for sustainable government support to enhance ICT accessibility. These measures promote sustainable development and improve livestock farmers’ livelihoods across Sikkim by adopting ICT tools.
