Transformative role of artificial intelligence in library management: A review

Integrating Artificial Intelligence(AI) in libraries fundamentally transforms conventional practices, fostering innovative methodologies in information management, user engagement, and operational efficiency. This study examines the application of AI within the library sector, synthesising literature published from 2010 to 2024 across reputable databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Taylor and Francis and Google Scholar. The study underscores AI's pivotal role in automating operations, enhancing information retrieval, personalising user experiences and optimising resource management. Key findings indicate that AI technologies, including natural language processing, machine learning and chatbots, are extensively utilised for cataloguing, virtual reference services and predictive analytics. Libraries are increasingly employing AI to facilitate efficient data mining, content curation and the development of advanced discovery tools, significantly enhancing service delivery and accessibility. Nonetheless, the review acknowledges challenges such as data privacy concerns, the necessity for staff training and the integration of AI within existing systems. It suggests a phased approach to AI adoption, emphasising the significance of moral considerations and capacity-building initiatives for library personnel. Furthermore, it calls for current research into the long-term implications of AI on library services, user trust, and information equity. In summary, AI possesses the potential to transform libraries into more efficient, user-centred, and sustainable institutions; however, its implementation must be approached with caution and deliberate intent.
