Abstract

Processing of raw hydrological data is the first task before any further use of the data. Hydrologic data processing has two major objectives: to evaluate the data for its accuracy, and to prepare the data in a form most valuable to the users. In this study the SWDES and HYMOS software were used for processing and analysis of rainfall and discharge data of the Satluj basin. The catchment of Satluj River between Namagia to Bhakra gauging sites was considered for this study. The rainfall data were validated using various techniques of validation. For runoff data between Rampur and Bhakra, the contribution from the intermediate catchment was compared with the average rainfall. A few suspect values in the historical record (1977 – 1998) were identified. Major deviations between the observed and expected values were matched with the original record. Some of the suspected values were found to be wrongly entered in the database, which confirms the necessity of data processing. Time series modeling of the runoff data at Rampur and Bhakra was also carried out.
