Abstract

The paper presents a study of Upper Krishna sub-basin with objectives such as water balance studies at individual sites in real domains (spatial and temporal), optimal allocation of land and water resources (surface and groundwater). examination of the intra-basin water transfers and study of the preceding objectives with reference to the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal award. The system is in surplus of water on annual basis, but deficit for mostly non-monsoon months. without consideration of ground water, whereas it is surplus with consideration of ground water. The water balance study reveals that system being surplus on annual basis requires an efficient management and operational mechanism in real domain to curb the crisis. The main objective of the study is maximization of the crop areas at different major projects, subject to the constraints relating to reservoir continuity (mass/quantity balance), reservoir storage space, conjunctive use of water, sitewise irrigation and municipal water demand, land use and Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal award to respective sites. The study reveals exciting results for it agrees with existing transboundary water transfer, cropping pattern encouraged by the Government of Maharashtra, and awards of the tribunal to respective sites.
