Renewable energy sources have shown a remarkable impact. Innovative technologies have been-developed; specifically, the hydrokinetic system is a type of zero-head class where-by energy is extracted from the kinetic energy of flowing water rather than the potential energy of falling water. The scenario for low-to zero-head installation systems typically lies at various hydraulic structures in irrigation canals, rivers, low-height dams, gauging weirs, outflow structures, etc., having huge potential. Researchers have carried-out investigations into hydrokinetic turbines (HKs), mostly by numerical analysis. The results revealed-that the power coefficient, Cp, was obtained at a maximum of 0.42 for the Savonius turbine and 0.45 for the Darrieus vertical-type turbine. And, experimentally, the maximum Cp is reported at 0.29 and 0.34 for-the Savonius turbine and Darrieus turbine, respectively. Moreover, the power factor can be increased by-using different augmentation techniques. Other, the horizontal type, i.e., axial flow turbine, Cp is obtained-higher than Savonius and Darrieus turbines. This paper comprised the concept and current technology, and methodology of the selection of the site, and turbines. In addition, the concluding work carried out by-many researchers may help to select the optimal HK turbine for a specific site.
