Energy is the most important factor of the human life and it should be developed in sustainable and environment friendly manner. It has been established that renewable energy resources in general and small hydropower in particular are environmentally benign. In renewable energy sources, small hydropower has got importance because it has large potential which can be harnessed in sustainable manner. It has been found that application of bulb turbine is most appropriate in low head SHP installations as due to pure axial flow passage in the bulb turbine hydraulic losses are very low. In case of bulb turbine civil structure is also less compared to the other turbines for similar site conditions. In this study effect of sand erosion on the bulb turbine is analyzed using ANSYS Fluent software. Turbine with no coating and with Tungsten carbide coating were also compared and found that after coating, maximum efficiency of bulb turbine is increased to 83.06% from 80.91%.
