<p>The news of the passing away of Sri Tarlok Singh has saddened me so much that for a while I was stunned and could not believe that he is no more to guide us in our endeavours of making the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI), a vibrant organization in spearheading a strong social science movement in the country. The death of the ‘grand old man’, who founded the IASSI and untiringly acted as its invaluable friend, guide and philosopher, is indeed an irreparable loss to the entire fraternity of scientists and the corpus of Social Science disciplines in the country.</p><p>Whilst I had heard a lot of praise from several Social Science scholars about Shri Singh's admirable personal qualities, including his close association with eminent social scientists, administrators and policy planners, I had an occasion to meet him personally at his residence on December 26, 2000, when I went there to give him the Prof. V.K.R.V. Rao Life Time award of the Indian Social Science Association. My brief meeting with him left a deep impression on me and kept me thinking about the exemplary modesty, profound scholarship and sterling humane qualities that Shri Singh possessed in abundance and exhibited them in great measure in his personal behaviour. I could hardly believe that an ICS officer of 1937 batch, a recipient of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, an LL.Dc Hon., a close associate of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a prolific writer of great eminence, could be so affable and affectionate to a person whom he was meeting for the first time. I was completely won over and could never forget the pleasure and privilege of meeting such a great man.</p><p>Later when I enquired about him more from some very distinguished social science scholars who had a close association with him, I was overwhelmed at the long list of honours, distinctions, awards and positions that Shri Singh received and held. My respect and reverence for a man of his stature, eminence and scholarship will continue to lead, inspire and guide me in discharging my responsibilities as the Chairman of the IASSI, of which he was the founder, nurturer and developer.</p><p>On behalf of IASSI and on my behalf, I offer my heartful condolence to the bereaved family. I pray to God to give his family, as also to us in IASSI, the strength to bear the irreparable loss. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace.</p></sec></body></article></article></body></html>
