Abstract

Water acts as a direct support system for all. The availability of this renewable natural resource of acceptable quality, in adequate quantity, at vital places and at the time needed is very important. The problem, however, is that with the growth of human population, there is a growing concern for adequacy of fresh water, which has further been aggravated by an uneven regional distribution of water over space and time in the Indian context. There is also a serious mismatch between the regional availability and the demand as arising from the spatial distribution of population and economic activities.
