Abstract

Ever increasing population growth in developing and underdeveloped countries in the last few decades has resulted in an unexpected increase in the number of people living in towns and cities. Consequently, economically weaker sections of the urban society i.e. thc urban poor cannot afford to live in clean places with a congenial environment and they have perforce to live on the outskirts of urban areas in crowded, unhealthy conditions often known as Urban Slums. They are common people like us but unfortunately neglected by our so called civilized society but deprived of a clean environment. It should be remembered that their contribution in serving our society is not inconsequential. A study of their social life is therefore relevant to analyze their struggle against an undesirable environment and, simultaneously, strategies to improve their living standard and social status should be found out.
