Education is key to social and economic transformation of any society. India has achieved considerable economic progress after Independence particularly since 1990s. There have been significant improvements in social and economic indicators as well. However, the country still faces some daunting challenges in terms of inequality and exclusion. In education also, the inequality and exclusion persists both in terms of quantity and quality. This Inaugural Address delivered at the IASSI Annual Conference provides an overview of the challenges of exclusion in education. It also gives some insights for making it more inclusive.
