Some of the recent public announcements indicate the transition of the University system in a new direction. It is important to know what constitutes a ‘new direction’. How does the idea of a University survive under a new set of policies constituting a new direction? What are its implications in terms of the role of a teacher? How a new direction affects the student community? Does it address the problems that confront higher education in India? What is the role of state in the transition of the University system in a new direction? These are some of the important questions that concern us and exact a reflective understanding. In the absence of above, an array of policy announcements might sound confusing and conflicting. This paper attempts to probe the questions noted above in order to obtain greater clarity on the recent policy moves.
