Abstract

Language is the most powerful instrument in conveying a message and reflecting one’s ideology. The article addresses the issues concerning the historical changes in the terminology of a disabled person. The changes reflect a different logic to understand disability as a phenomenon. The differences in Cultural sensitivity in the use of language is also vital for the exact understanding of a phenomenon. This article will prove beneficial to the reader interested in the ‘Special education’ field as major terms have been described in the paper. Lastly, the terms and phrases to be avoided and how they have been replaced with time. As issues have historical, socio-political and economic undertones. It is significant to be conscious of these subtle and its impacts on differently-abled individuals. Changing parlance will not have an impact if there is not a positive transformation in attitudes towards disability.
