Abstract

Migration is a universal phenomenon that occurs as a result of various push and pull factors on the respective place of origin and the place of destination. The push and full factors of migration can be traced through various reasons that force people to migrate. Migration or movement of people from one place to another can be permanent or temporary in nature and follows various patterns based on the origin and destination of the movement. Thus, the current paper attempts to study the pattern of migration and its determinants in India. The findings of the study put forward that, overall, most of the male migration occurs due to employment related reasons with rural to urban stream and inter-district migration, while female migration happens largely due to marriage under rural to rural stream and intra-district migration. The findings also suggest that females are more likely to migrate compared to male population. People with technical education and working age groups from 15 to 59 years have greater probability to migrate.
