Abstract

Digital Connectivity provides users with equal opportunities to benefit from technology. However, differences in digital usage patterns lead to varying outcomes. The productive use of technology contributes to growth, and vice-versa. The study examines how socio-economic factors influence digital usage patterns in the selected villages of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Using primary data, the intensity of online activities such as information search, communication, social networking and entertainment is assessed. Digital scores are developed to evaluate the status of villages in terms of digital usage patterns. Variations in these scores are explained using an ordered probit model. The study identifies the significant role of factors such as education, social backwardness, employment status, and economic condition on digital usage patterns. Though variations are also observed according to gender, social hierarchy, remoteness, and state-and village-specific factors, these differences are more related to lack of opportunities and motivation, which push the users to engage in online gaming and entertainment during their free time. To address these disparities, the study suggests encouraging users to engage more productively with technology. This can be achieved by promoting digital skills relevant to local economies, supporting e-commerce and digital entrepreneurship, and leveraging remittances to enhance digital literacy and investment in technology.
