Abstract

Droughts are a guaranteed but unpredictable phenomenon occurring, on average, about 4 out of every 10 years. Drought can bring feelings of great anger, frustration and hopelessness to farmers, especially for those already experiencing tough financial times. Successful management dependson anticipating that drought will occur and planning inadvance how to deal with it. Advance planning is critical because it allows us to consider a variety of options andmake decisions early to avoid crisis situations. Delays indecision making often leads to intensification of the problem, economic loss, and long-term damage to rangel and resources. There is no cookbook approach for proper drought management. It really boils down to the fact that soundrange management practices that sustain or improve range condition will ultimately result in good drought management. Well-planned grazing practices that promote conservative for age use while sustaining high vigor of desirable plants is good insurance against drought.
