Abstract

An antibiogram profile for 15 different antibiotics obtained against 47 S. aureus isolates from Rathi cattle with clinical mastitis revealed that all the isolates were sensitive to 4 of the antibiotics viz. cloxacillin, gentamicin, sparfloxacin and methicillin, 96% to 90% isolates to chloramphenicol, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, streptomycin, oxacillin and co-trimaxazole in descending order. All the S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin-G and good amount of resistance was shown towards amoxicillin, ampicillin and oxytetracyclin. Though no resistance was recorded towards erythromycin but efficacy was only 54%. The study revealed that most of the antibiotics had a good efficacy against S. aureus of milk origin.
