Behind The Walls to Beyond the Walls

Stakeholders choose institutional care as an immediate, short term as well as long term care for children irrespective of the difficult situation, age, family support, availability of other alternate care. Knowledge, understanding, attitude, perception, belief, awareness and experience form the basis for any decision affecting the formation of conducive environment for child's development. These conceptions of ideas could be appropriate one or misappropriate notion. An attempt is made to understand the prevailing myths and misconceptions during and after placing children in institutional care as well as in exploring other alternate care for those children. The common myths and misconceptions prevailing among service provider and those who are in direct contact with children require a paradigm shift from incomplete understanding to complete understanding which will transform the children from behind the walls to beyond the walls. The myths are discussed in a scientific perspective, child rights ’perspective and the effort needs to be considered for demystifying the same.
