“Counseling was my favorite part of the Emerge Centre. I have never been able to talk to a counselor before. When I feel sad, or am having bad thoughts, I can talk to the counselor. After talking I feel like I can be present again, I feel release. All of the subjects are different, every day is different, it makes my life happy. I learned English for the first time, and now can understand and speak a little bit. Self-defense class was good, in my life, if I ever need to protect myself, now I can and I will. I know that if I ever have problem, I can come back here”.-Emerge Centre Alumna
“At the Emerge Centre, I learned many things. My favorite three subjects at the Centre have been self-defense, life skills, and jewelry making. In self-defense class, I have learned skills that make me feel strong, and ready to protect myself if I ever need to. In life skills class, I learned about teamwork, to do things in society, and how to prepare for a job. In jewelry making class, I learned how to create bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. While creating these things, I feel relaxed and happy. After I graduate from the Emerge Centre, I am excited to live independently, work my first job at a daycare, and explore Sri Lanka. I am thankful to Emerge for helping me to prepare for my next steps in life”.-Emerge Centre Alumna
