Abstract

Soil of Mahanadi basin is a product of denudational, environmental and biological processes. Climatic conditions flora and fauna of the basin also effect soil formation of the basin. Dry months of the region provide disintegrated material for the formation of soil. Humid months are responsible for the erosion, transportation and deposition of weathered material. Coarse grained soil is found near highlands and residual hills where as fine grained soil lies in piedmont areas and near the banks of rivers. Automorphic, red, yellow, brown, black, alluvial and laterite are the soils of region. The colour and chemical properties of soil depends on the parental rocks.
