Abstract

The effect of polyethylene mulching and non-mulch on weed control and Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata L.) growth and yield was evaluated. The main treatments were plastic mulch and bare soil and sub treatments were three drip irrigation levels at 80%, 100% and 120% ET and one control irrigation. Plastic mulch suppressed weeds; results indicated that in 100% ET in without mulched shows weeds (22) than the mulched field (4.5) in one meter square area in 15 days after transplanting. The best vegetative growth i e cabbage head diameter and head weight was obtained by plastic than the bare soil. The maximum head diameter and head weight of cabbage was found in mulch condition (124.24 mm, 1.36 kg head−1) than the bare mulched condition (109.08 mm, 0.87 kg head−1). The polyethylene mulch with 100% irrigation in drip gave the highest cabbage yield (92.95 t ha−1), followed by mulch with 80% in drip irrigation (89.17 t ha−1).
