Abstract

Tomato is the major crop all over the world. Several diseases and pests cause significant losses in yields and quality. In this study, yields, agronomic and molecular traits of different types of new tomato varieties (cherry, plum and beef types) were assessed through marker-assisted screening (MAS). Experiments were conducted in randomized blocks design with three replications. Experimental plots had 10 plants in a greenhouse. Eight types of cherry and plum and eleven types of beef tomatoes were experimented and six commercial hybrids were used as control treatments. Resistance of hybrids to the most important diseases (TYLCV and Fusarium) was also assessed through MAS technique. Ty-1, Ty-3 and Frl genes were identified for resistance to TYLCV and FORL. JB1, P6–25 and SCARFrl markers were used respectively for Ty-1, Ty-3 and Frl genes. Among the beef types, the hybrid 14–37 had the greatest yield and it was followed by 14–39, 14–45, and 14–44 were followed this variety. Among the cherry types, the hybrid 14–106 had the greatest yield and it was followed by 14–108 and 14–107. MAS analyses revealed that 7 beef tomato hybrids carried Ty-3 and Ty-1 genes together, while 3 tomato hybrids additionally had Frl gene. In other small types, 6 hybrids carried Ty-3 and Ty-1 genes and 2 hybrids also had Frl genes. In this study, 14–37 beef type and 14–106 small type hybrids were found to be prominent with regard to yield and disease resistance.
