'Stress!' Even the word can send shivers down your spine. Most of us live in a world where stressors of all sorts come at us daily - stress at work, stress at home, and stress all around us. We constantly are bombarded with stressors when we walk through the door at work, when we go on-line, when we drive through traffic, or when we turn on the TV or radio.
Vork stress is recognized world wide as a major challenge to worker's health and the healthiness of their organizations. Workers who are stressed are also more likely to be unhealthy, poorly motivated, less productive and less safe at work. Their organizations are less likely to be successful in a competitive environment. Stress can be brought about by pressures at home.:nd work. Employers may not usually protect workers from stress arising outside of work, but they can protect them from s rress that arises through work.
Jrganizational stress management programs abound, and a growing body of research has given us insight into the causes and potential antidotes for stress.
This paper discusses the various causes of occupational stress in today's turbulent business environment and the measures iich can be taken by the organizations and the employees themselves to manage workplace stress for giving an optimal: -ormance at work.
