A 3-year study conducted on loamy-sand soil at Anand showed that sowing of pearlmillet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.emend. Stuntz] on 15 March by transplanting gave significantly higher grain yield than that of crop sown on 15 February, but it remained at par with transplanting of crop on 1 March. Transplanting performed.better than drilling when the crop was sown during the first fortnight of March. However, transplanting was not advisable under early-sown crop, i.e. sowing on 15 February. Delay in sowing reduced the grain yield. The age of seedling had no significant influence on grain yield. Application of phosphorus was not found beneficial where the available P status of soil analyzing medium.
