Integrated nutrient management in wheat (Triticum aestivum) - mungbean (Phaseolus radiatus) cropping sequence in arid region

Abstract

The results of field experiment conducted in 1997–98 and 1998–99 revealed that application of organic manure improved yield attributes, grain and straw yields of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol.). Application of Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L) Czernj. & Cosson] siliquae straw compost at 10 tonnes/ha yielded at par with 10 tonnes/ha FYM in wheat. Integration of compost or FYM at 10 tonnes/ha with 90 kg N/ha resulted maximum grain and straw yields of wheat. Significantly higher uptake of N and P in grain as well as straw was obtained with the application of 90 kg N + 10 tonnes mustard siliquae straw compost or FYM/ha compared to other treatments. The usages of mustard siliquae straw compost or FYM with or without fertilizer nitrogen in wheat enhanced succeeding mungbean (Phaseolus radiatus L) yield and N and P uptake over the control and 90 kg N/ha. Analysis of soil after harvesting the mungbean crop showed a significant build up of organic carbon and an increase in available P in the plots treated with N and farmyard manure or mustard siliquae straw compost.
