A field experiment was conducted at the Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur, during 1998–2001, to assess the production potential and economic feasibility of clusterbean or guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert]-based cropping systems. Treatments comprised 2 cropping systems, viz. guar-mustard [Brassica juncea (L) Czernj. & Cosson] and guar-blond psyllium or isabgol (Plantago ovata Forsk.), with 4 fertility levels to guar crop (control, one-third of RDF, two-thirds of RDF and full RDF, i.e. 20 kg N + 40 kg P2O5/ha). Maximum seed yield of guar was recorded under full recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) which was significantly higher over the control and one-third of RDF in all the seasons. Application of full recommended dose and two-thirds RDF to guar had also carry-over effect on succeeding mustard as well as isabgol crops. However, the residual effect of one-third RDF was not significant. The sustainability-yield index was maximum (0.85) in case of guar-mustard rotation with RDF and two-thirds of RDF, followed by one-third RDF. However, maximum gross and net returns per annum were higher in guar-isabgol cropping system than guar-mustard system with RDF.
