Abstract

The germination of seeds and sprouting of cuttings of Albizia adianthifolia was investigated using two types of sowing media (river sand and a mixture (1:3 v/v) of river sand and top soil). The germination experiment was conducted using germination boxes while sprouting of cuttings was assessed in a non mist propagator. Early growth of the germinated seeds and sprouted cuttings was also assessed in polypots and on raised nursery beds. The results showed that germination was better in river sand (86.67%) although this was not significantly different from that of a mixture of riversand and topsoil (86.57%). Sprouting of cuttings was better in pure riversand with significantly higher percentage sprouting (58.3%) than for riversand/topsoil mix (38.3%). Seedlings planted in polypots had the most rapid growth recording the highest shoot height (11.7 cm), the longest root length (12.5 cm) and the highest plant dry weight (1.67 g) after 12 weeks of growth.
