The phytochemical composition and inhibitory effects of musk tree seed (Buchholzia coriacea) on maize weevils (Sitophilus zeamais) were studied. The inhibitory potentials of the Buchholzia coriacea was compared with other commonly used botanicals (Piper guinense and pepper) on the Sitophilus zeamais. The maize grains were stored in nylon bag, plastic container and polyethylene sack. The shelf stability of the maize grains was monitored by evaluating the motality of the maize weevils, moisture content and other physicochemical properties of the stored maize grains. The result revealed the presence of tannins (0.852mg/100mg), alkaloids(0.735mg/100g), phytate (0.018mg/100g) total phenolics (0.043mg/100mg), saponins, steroids and flavonoids (0.13mg/100g) in the seed flour. The results also showed that Buchholzia coriacae when used as preservative on maize grains stored in polyethylene sack and plastic container compared well with other botanicals against Sitophilus zeamais, achieving as high as 30% mortality in each case.
