The steep rise in prices of food commodities and petroleum based fuel is concerning policy makers in India and has raised the issue of food and energy security for the country. Like in many other countries around the world,the biofuels have gained momentum in the past 5–6 years in India. This paper is intended to discuss and summarize the important critical topics on the subject such as types of biofuels and the irrelevance for India, biofuels vs fossilfuels, their comparative advantages and strategies, biotechnological approaches for biofuel production, food vs fuel and sustainability andp roduction of biofuel seeds and feedstocks in India. It also highlights the limitations and future concerns in this field.
