The present paper describes effect of water stress on biochemical parameters of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var. Pusa Sheetal) and its alleviation by incorporation of sodium silicate in soil during pot study. Different biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, total soluble protein, sugar content, proline, nitrate reductase activity and activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase) were examined in tomato leaves at 40 and 60 days after sowing. The activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, APX and POX were significantly enhanced under 3 and 6 days water stress treatment at flowering stage. The results of the present investigation revealed the protective mechanism of sodium silicate via the modulation of antioxidative defense system in tomato plants against water stress.
